Louie Riel
Louis Riel was a Métis leader and founder of the province of Manitoba in Canada. He played a key role in advocating for Métis rights and culture during the 19th century, especially in response to Canadian expansion and government policies. Riel led two significant resistance movements—the Red River Resistance in 1869-1870 and the North-West Rebellion in 1885—fighting for the recognition of Métis people and their land rights. Although he was ultimately executed for treason, Riel is now regarded as a national hero and a symbol of Métis identity and perseverance.
