LOPA (Layer of Protection Analysis)
Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) is a systematic approach to evaluating and managing risks in industrial processes. It involves identifying potential hazards, estimating their likelihood and potential consequences, and then assessing existing safety measures (layers) that prevent or mitigate these hazards. By examining whether these safety layers are sufficient, LOPA helps determine if additional protections are needed to reduce risks to acceptable levels. Essentially, it’s a structured way to ensure that safety measures are adequate, helping organizations manage complex hazards effectively without over- or under-investing in safety.
