Lok Adalat

Lok Adalat, meaning "People's Court," is a statutory alternative dispute resolution mechanism in India, aimed at settling disputes amicably outside traditional courts. It facilitates speedier, cost-effective resolution of civil, criminal, and other disputes through mutual agreement between parties, often involving legal representatives. The process is voluntary, and decisions (awards) are legally binding and enforceable. Lok Adalats help decongest courts, reduce litigation costs, and promote justice by encouraging parties to resolve their issues amicably, fostering harmony and saving time. They operate under the Legal Services Authorities Act and are presided over by judges or panel members.
