Lock (waterway)

A lock on a waterway is a mechanism that helps boats and ships travel between different water levels, such as sections of a canal or river with varying heights. It consists of a chamber with gates at both ends. The boat enters the lock, and the gates close behind it. Water is then either added or drained to raise or lower the water level inside the chamber, matching the level of the next section. Once the water level is equalized, the gates open again, allowing the vessel to continue its journey smoothly. Locks enable safe and efficient navigation across uneven terrains.
