Lock (water)

A water lock, or lock system, is a structure used in canals and waterways to help ships and boats navigate different water levels. It consists of a chamber with gates at both ends. When a vessel enters, the gates close, and water is added or drained to raise or lower the water level inside the chamber, matching the level of the destination waterway. Once the water levels are equalized, the gates open, allowing the vessel to continue its journey. Locks make it possible to traverse multiple elevations along a waterway efficiently and safely.
