Liver regeneration
Liver regeneration is the process by which the liver repairs and regrows after injury or partial removal. The liver’s unique ability allows it to restore its size and function by stimulating the growth of new liver cells, or hepatocytes. This process involves complex signaling pathways that sense missing tissue and activate cell division. Importantly, the liver can regenerate to its original size even if up to 70% has been removed, making it unique among organs. This regenerative capacity is vital for recovery from injury, surgery, or diseases affecting liver function.
