Liver failure

Liver failure occurs when the liver loses its ability to perform vital functions, such as filtering toxins, producing important proteins, and regulating blood clotting. This can happen suddenly (acute) or gradually (chronic) due to liver diseases like hepatitis, alcohol abuse, or cirrhosis. When the liver fails, harmful substances build up in the body, blood clotting becomes impaired, and symptoms like jaundice (yellowing skin), confusion, swelling, and fatigue develop. Without prompt treatment, liver failure can be life-threatening, requiring interventions such as medication, supportive care, or a liver transplant.
