LIRR's East Side Access Project

The LIRR's East Side Access Project is a major construction effort to connect Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) trains directly to Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan, bypassing slower routes through Queens. This allows LIRR passengers to travel more quickly and conveniently to and from Manhattan's east side, reducing congestion at Penn Station. The project involves building new tunnels underneath New York City, including a new underground terminal near Grand Central. Completed in 2023, it significantly improves transit options for Long Island commuters, enhances capacity, and alleviates crowding on existing lines.
