LIRR History

The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), established in 1834, is one of the oldest commuter railroads in the U.S., originally serving farmers and towns on Long Island. Over time, it expanded through mergers and new lines, connecting Long Island to New York City. It played a vital role in suburban development, enabling daily travel for commuters. In 1960, it became part of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), ensuring urban transit integration. Today, the LIRR is a major transportation network, providing reliable rail service for thousands of passengers daily, supporting the growth of Long Island and the New York metropolitan area.
