Lipoprotein lipase
Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) is an enzyme that plays a key role in fat metabolism. It is found on the walls of blood vessels, especially near fat stores and muscles. LPL helps break down triglycerides—fat molecules carried in the blood by lipoproteins like chylomicrons and very-low-density lipoproteins (VLDL)—into smaller components, mainly fatty acids and glycerol. These smaller parts can then be absorbed by tissues for energy use or storage. Proper functioning of LPL is essential for maintaining healthy blood fat levels and overall metabolic health.
