Linji Yixuan (Lin-ji I-shuan)
Linji Yixuan was an influential Chinese Buddhist master of the Chan (Zen) tradition during the 9th century. Known for his direct and dynamic teaching style, he emphasized sudden enlightenment and encouraged practitioners to challenge their habitual thinking through unconventional methods like shouting, physical actions, or paradoxical phrases called koans. Linji’s approach aimed to jolt students out of complacency and promote experiential realization of their true nature. His teachings profoundly shaped Zen Buddhism, emphasizing spontaneity, directness, and the importance of personal insight over formal doctrine.
