Linguistic Survey of India

The Linguistic Survey of India was a comprehensive research project conducted from 1896 to 1928 to document and analyze the languages spoken across India. Its goal was to understand the diversity, origins, dialects, and structures of India's numerous languages and dialects. Carried out by linguist Suniti Kumar Chatterji and others, it provided detailed classifications and records, helping scholars, policymakers, and educators better understand India's rich linguistic landscape. This survey remains an important resource for studying Indian languages and their development over time.
