Lingayat sect
The Lingayat sect is a distinct religious tradition originating in Karnataka, India, founded in the 12th century by Basavanna. Lingayats emphasize devotion to Lord Shiva, reject idol worship, and promote personal spiritual practice through the wearing of a sacred amulet called a "Linga." They uphold principles of equality, social justice, and community service, often challenging caste-based discrimination. Recognized as a separate religious community in India, Lingayats combine elements of Shaivism with social reform ideas, and their practices include chanting, meditation, and ethical living. The sect has significantly influenced the cultural and religious landscape of southern India.
