Limerick's Treaty

Limerick's Treaty refers to the Treaty of Limerick signed in 1691, ending the Williamite War in Ireland. It was an agreement between the defenders of Gaelic Ireland, led by Patrick Sarsfield, and William of Orange’s forces. The treaty promised certain rights and protections to the Irish Catholics, including religious freedoms and the right to retain arms. However, many of these promises were not upheld, leading to widespread discontent. The treaty is significant because it marked the end of hopes for Gaelic independence and set the stage for centuries of English dominance and the suppression of Irish culture and religion.
