Lictors
Lictors were ancient Roman officers responsible for escorting and protecting high-ranking officials like magistrates and consuls. They carried fasces—bundles of rods that symbolized authority and power—and served as symbols of state authority. Lictors maintained order, announced the arrival of officials, and could execute or discipline people if authorized. Their presence emphasized the official's status and the authority of the Roman state, and they played an important role in maintaining the dignity and security of governmental functions.
