Libet's experiments
Libet’s experiments investigated the relationship between brain activity and conscious decision-making. Participants were asked to flex their fingers at a moment of their choosing while their brain activity was monitored via EEG. Researchers also recorded when participants reported becoming aware of their intention to move. They found that brain signals indicating movement (the readiness potential) appeared several hundred milliseconds before participants consciously perceived the decision to act. This suggests that the brain initiates actions before conscious awareness, raising questions about free will and how much our choices are driven by unconscious processes.
