Liberia Colonization Society

The Liberia Colonization Society was founded in 1822 with the goal of relocating freed African Americans to Africa. It aimed to promote the settlement of freed enslaved people in what became Liberia, believing they would establish a nation there. Supported by American abolitionists and some former slaveholders, the society helped establish Liberia’s capital, Monrovia, and facilitated migration. While intended to assist freed slaves, the movement also reflected complex views on race and colonization, and it played a significant role in the country's founding, shaping Liberia's development as an independent republic in 1847.
