levels of consciousness
Levels of consciousness refer to the different states our awareness can be in, ranging from full alertness to complete unconsciousness. When alert, we are fully aware of ourselves and our surroundings, able to think clearly and respond. As consciousness decreases, such as during drowsiness or sleep, awareness diminishes. In medical contexts, altered states like coma or anesthesia are even deeper levels where awareness and responsiveness are severely impaired. These levels reflect how much information the brain is actively processing and responding to at any given time.
