Leucoreduction

Leucoreduction is a process used in blood banking to remove white blood cells (leukocytes) from blood donations before transfusion. White blood cells can cause adverse reactions or transmit certain infections, so reducing their number improves safety and the shelf life of the blood. The process typically involves passing the blood through a special filter that traps the white cells, leaving behind mostly red blood cells and plasma. This technique is common in blood transfusions, especially for patients who need repeated transfusions, immune-compromised individuals, or when reducing the risk of febrile (fever-causing) reactions.
