Leptospira
Leptospira are spiral-shaped bacteria that can cause a disease called leptospirosis in humans and animals. They are often found in water contaminated with the urine of infected animals, such as rodents. When people come into contact with contaminated water or soil, especially through cuts, abrasions, or mucous membranes, the bacteria can enter the body. Symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, and flu-like illness, but can sometimes lead to more severe health problems. Leptospira are diagnosed through laboratory testing and are typically treated effectively with antibiotics when caught early.
