Leonin (composer)
Leonin was a pioneering medieval composer from the 12th century, renowned for developing early polyphony, where multiple melodies are sung or played simultaneously. He was part of the Notre Dame School in Paris and is credited with expanding the musical structure of the Mass, especially in the "Magnus Liber" (Great Book). His compositions often feature intricate, harmonized voices that enhance the richness and depth of the music. Leonin's innovations laid the foundation for Western choral and sacred music, influencing musical development during the Middle Ages and beyond.
