Leningrad during WWII
During WWII, Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) endured a brutal 872-day siege by Nazi forces from 1941 to 1944. The German army aimed to starve and weaken the city’s population, cutting off supplies and bombarding it continuously. Despite extreme hardship, Leningrad residents and defenders showed remarkable resilience, maintaining their city and morale. The siege caused immense suffering, with hundreds of thousands dying from starvation, cold, and bombings. Ultimately, the Soviet Union lifted the blockade, marking a significant and symbolic victory in the Allied effort against Nazi Germany.
