Lemon v. Kurtzman

Lemon v. Kurtzman (1971) was a landmark Supreme Court case concerning the separation of church and state. The Court ruled that state funding for religious schools violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. The decision established the "Lemon Test," which assesses whether a law is religiously neutral, promotes or inhibits religion, and does not foster excessive government entanglement with religion. This case set important precedents for how public funds can and cannot be used in relation to religious institutions, reinforcing the principle that government should not support one religion over another or religion over non-religion.
