Legio

A "legio," or legion, was the largest military unit used by ancient Rome. Comprising about 4,000 to 6,000 soldiers called legionaries, it was a highly organized and flexible force capable of swift and coordinated action. Legions were divided into smaller groups for battle and training, with their structure allowing Rome to control vast territories and execute complex military strategies. The effectiveness and discipline of the legio made it a cornerstone of Rome’s military success and expansion throughout the empire.
