Legal History of Women in the Military
The legal history of women in the military has evolved significantly over the past century. Initially, women were largely excluded from military service, serving primarily in support roles during World Wars I and II. The 1948 Women's Armed Services Integration Act allowed women to serve as regular members. Over the decades, policies changed, with the lifting of many restrictions on combat roles in the 1990s and 2000s. Landmark changes like the 2013 decision to open all military positions to women further advanced gender equality in the armed forces, recognizing their valuable contributions and capabilities in all areas of service.
