Left Atrial Appendage Closure
Left Atrial Appendage Closure (LAAC) is a minimally invasive medical procedure aimed at reducing stroke risk in people with atrial fibrillation, a heart rhythm disorder. The left atrial appendage is a small pouch in the heart where blood clots can form due to irregular beating. These clots can travel to the brain and cause a stroke. During LAAC, a device is inserted via a catheter to seal off this pouch, preventing clots from escaping. This offers an alternative to long-term blood-thinning medications, lowering bleeding risks while protecting against strokes.
