Leeward Maroons
The Leeward Maroons are descendants of escaped enslaved Africans on Jamaica's northwestern coast, forming independent communities known as Maroon societies. Originating in the 17th century, they resisted colonial control through guerrilla warfare and built self-sufficient villages in rugged, inaccessible terrain. The Leeward Maroons maintained their cultural identity, language, and traditional practices while negotiating treaties with colonial authorities for autonomy. Their resilience and resistance played a vital role in resisting slavery and shaping Jamaican history, serving as symbols of freedom and independence for the island.
