Layakari

Layakari is a rhythmic concept in Indian classical music and dance that involves playing or performing with a deliberate and creative manipulation of tempo and timing. It is the art of introducing variations—such as speeding up, slowing down, or creating syncopation—within a steady rhythmic cycle called a “tala.” This enhances the expressive quality of the performance and showcases the performer's mastery in maintaining rhythmic harmony while exploring improvisation. Essentially, Layakari allows performers to add interest and complexity to rhythm, making the performance dynamic and engaging while respecting the underlying structure of the tala.
