Laws of the North (Lögrétta)
The Laws of the North, known as Lögrétta, was an Icelandic legal assembly from the medieval period, part of the Althing, one of the world's oldest parliaments. It functioned as the legislative body responsible for making, amending, and interpreting laws in medieval Iceland. Representatives from different regions gathered annually to debate legal issues, resolve disputes, and approve new laws, ensuring community consensus. The Lögrétta played a central role in maintaining legal order and societal governance without a centralized monarchy, embodying Iceland’s tradition of communal decision-making and legal independence.
