Lawrence Massacre
The Lawrence Massacre, also known as Quantrill's Raid, occurred on August 21, 1863, during the American Civil War. Confederate guerrillas led by William Quantrill attacked the Union-supporting town of Lawrence, Kansas, killing around 150 to 200 men and boys. The attack was brutal, aiming to punish and discourage anti-Confederate activity in Kansas. It shocked the nation and intensified the violent conflict in the border region. The raid remains one of the deadliest acts of violence during the Civil War on U.S. soil.
