Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR)
A Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) is a non-citizen who has been granted the right to live and work in a country indefinitely. In the U.S., LPRs receive a green card, which signifies their legal status. LPRs enjoy many of the same benefits as citizens, such as access to education and work opportunities, but they do not have the right to vote in federal elections. They can apply for U.S. citizenship after meeting specific requirements. Maintaining LPR status requires adhering to immigration laws, including living in the country for a certain period.
