Late Cretaceous period
The Late Cretaceous period, roughly 100 to 66 million years ago, was the final chapter of the age of dinosaurs. It was characterized by warm climates, high sea levels creating shallow inland seas, and diverse ecosystems. Dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops thrived, alongside early flowering plants. Large marine reptiles and extensive marine life also flourished. This period ended with a massive extinction event—most dinosaurs, along with many other species, disappeared—likely due to a giant asteroid impact, paving the way for mammals and modern life to rise.
