Last Glacial Maximum

The Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) occurred about 26,500 years ago, during the last Ice Age, when ice sheets were at their thickest and glaciers extended far into northern regions. Large parts of North America, Europe, and Asia were covered in ice, leading to lower sea levels and harsher climates. This period significantly affected ecosystems and human populations, as many animals migrated or went extinct, while humans adapted to these challenging conditions. The LGM ended around 19,000 years ago, marking a gradual warming of the Earth and the retreat of glaciers, which shaped today’s landscapes and environments.
