Landfills
Landfills are designated areas where waste materials are buried and managed. They are designed to safely contain garbage, preventing pollution and allowing for decomposition over time. Waste is layered with soil to minimize odors and pests. Modern landfills have systems to collect leachate (liquid that drains through waste) and gases produced during decomposition to mitigate environmental impact. Although they are crucial for waste management, landfills can pose risks like groundwater contamination and greenhouse gas emissions, which is why recycling and waste reduction practices are important to lessen dependence on them.
