Lambert-Eaton Syndrome
Lambert-Eaton Syndrome (LES) is a rare auto-immune disorder that affects the communication between nerves and muscles. In LES, the body's immune system mistakenly attacks calcium channels in nerve endings, which are crucial for sending signals to muscles. This leads to muscle weakness, particularly in the limbs and sometimes the eyes. Unlike other conditions that cause muscle weakness, LES often improves with activity. It can be associated with certain cancers, especially small cell lung cancer. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms and may include medications that improve nerve-to-muscle communication or address the underlying cancer.
