Lambert-Eaton Myasthenic Syndrome
Lambert-Eaton Myasthenic Syndrome (LEMS) is a rare autoimmune disorder where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks nerve cells that help muscles contract. This interference reduces the release of acetylcholine, a chemical vital for muscle movement, causing muscle weakness, fatigue, and difficulty with actions like walking or lifting. Often associated with underlying cancers, such as small cell lung cancer, LEMS symptoms can improve with treatment targeting the immune response or the underlying condition. Early diagnosis and management are important to improve quality of life and address any associated health issues.
