Lake Moeris

Lake Moeris was a large ancient basin located in Egypt, near the city of Faiyum. Originally a natural depression, it was artificially expanded into a vast freshwater reservoir by the ancient Greeks and Romans to regulate irrigation for agriculture. The lake played a crucial role in supporting the region’s farming economy and was connected to a sophisticated system of canals and tunnels. Over time, climate changes and irrigation practices altered its size, and today it is largely dry, with only remnants of its past presence visible. It highlights early engineering efforts to manage water resources in arid environments.
