Lake Michigan

Lake Michigan is one of the five Great Lakes in North America, and it’s entirely within the United States. It’s the second-largest of the lakes by volume and the only one located entirely in the U.S. Its surface area covers about 22,400 square miles, making it a significant body of freshwater. Lake Michigan plays a vital role in transportation, recreation, and water resources for nearby cities, including Chicago. Its ecosystems support diverse plant and animal life, and it influences regional climate. As part of the Great Lakes system, it also contributes to the Great Lakes’ collective importance for freshwater supply and environmental sustainability.
