Lake Eyre's salinity
Lake Eyre's salinity is exceptionally high because it is a vast, mostly endorheic (closed) basin with limited freshwater inflow and high evaporation rates. When rain falls, it temporarily fills the lake, but the intense heat and evaporation remove most of the water, leaving behind salts and minerals. Over time, this process concentrates the salt, making the lake one of the saltiest bodies of water in the world. The high salinity prevents most aquatic life from thriving, though some specially adapted microbes can survive in these extreme conditions.
