Lafora Disease
Lafora Disease is a rare, genetic disorder that affects the brain and leads to severe epilepsy. It typically appears in adolescents, causing frequent seizures, progressive neurological decline, and cognitive impairment. The condition is caused by mutations in specific genes that disrupt the normal breakdown of certain sugars, leading to the buildup of abnormal glycogen, known as Lafora bodies, in cells. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure, and treatments mainly focus on managing symptoms. The disease progresses over time, impacting the quality of life and requiring comprehensive care and support for affected individuals and their families.
