Lafora Bodies
Lafora bodies are abnormal structures that accumulate inside cells, particularly in the brain, of individuals with Lafora disease, a rare genetic disorder. This condition typically appears in late childhood or adolescence and is characterized by severe epilepsy and neurological decline. Lafora bodies are formed from improperly processed sugars, leading to the buildup of these cellular inclusions, which disrupt normal brain function. The presence of Lafora bodies can be seen in brain tissue samples under a microscope and is associated with the progression of this debilitating disease. Understanding these bodies helps researchers investigate potential treatments.
