Ladder Theory
Ladder Theory explains how people choose romantic partners based on different priorities. It suggests that individuals have a “ladder” with two levels: the higher level includes partners they find most desirable emotionally and psychologically, while the lower level includes less ideal options. People first compare candidates on the high-level criteria; if none meet their standards, they consider the next best options on the lower level. This process means people don’t automatically settle for less but step down the ladder only if their top choices aren’t available. The theory helps explain why preferences shape dating and partner selection.
