LABEL Theory

Labeling Theory suggests that the way society labels individuals—such as "criminal" or "deviant"—can influence their self-identity and behavior. When someone is stigmatized or publicly classified in a negative way, they may internalize this label, which can lead them to adopt roles and behaviors associated with that label. This process can perpetuate delinquency or deviance, as the individual’s self-concept becomes aligned with society's expectations. Essentially, societal reactions and labels can contribute to shaping a person's identity and actions, highlighting the importance of understanding how labels impact social behavior.
