L'Art Brut
L’Art Brut, or "raw art," refers to art created outside the mainstream art world, often by self-taught individuals without formal training. Coined by French artist Jean Dubuffet in the 1940s, it emphasizes authentic, uninhibited expression from those on the fringes of society, such as psychiatric patients, prisoners, or amateurs. L’Art Brut highlights raw emotion, unique perspective, and originality, celebrating the purity of instinctual creativity over technical perfection. It has influenced contemporary art by challenging traditional notions of art-making and valuing the sincerity of outsider artists.
