Kutiyattam
Kutiyattam is an ancient Indian theatrical tradition from Kerala, recognized as a UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. It is a classical Sanskrit theatre form that combines expressive acting, intricate gestures (mudras), dance, music, and elaborate costumes to tell mythological stories, primarily from Hindu epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Performed mainly in temples, Kutiyattam emphasizes devotional themes and spiritual expression. The elaborate training, disciplined performance technique, and poetic language make it a sophisticated art form that preserves India’s rich cultural and religious heritage.
