Kula
Kula is a ceremonial exchange system practiced by the Melanesian islands of the South Pacific, notably in the Trobriand Islands. It involves the giving and receiving of valuable shell necklaces (soulava) and armbands (mwali) in a specific, cyclical pattern among participating islands. The purpose is to establish and reinforce social bonds, prestige, and alliances rather than for economic gain. The exchanges are highly ritualized, requiring participants to carefully maintain their relationships through ongoing gifting. Kula exemplifies how social status and connections are built through reciprocal giving, emphasizing community cohesion over material wealth.
