Korean naval history

Korean naval history dates back over a thousand years, with advanced shipbuilding and strategic fleets playing key roles. The Goryeo Dynasty (918–1392) developed powerful ships for defense, while the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1897) established a highly organized naval force, including the famous turtle ships—wooden war vessels with iron plates and spiked armor, used against invaders. Korea faced invasions from Japan, China, and others, shaping its maritime tactics. During the 20th century, modern naval forces emerged, with South Korea now possessing one of Asia’s most advanced navies, focused on regional security, maritime trade protection, and deterring threats.
