Kon-Tiki (boat)

The Kon-Tiki was a traditional raft built by Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl in 1947. Made from native balsa wood logs and hemp ropes, it was designed to demonstrate that ancient people could have traveled across the Pacific Ocean. Heyerdahl and his crew sailed approximately 8,000 kilometers (5,000 miles) from South America to the Polynesian islands, relying on ocean currents and wind. The successful voyage showcased the possibility of prehistoric transoceanic contact and increased understanding of ancient maritime capabilities. The Kon-Tiki remains a symbol of daring exploration and ingenuity.
