Komitas (Soghomon Soghomonian)

Komitas, born Soghomon Soghomonian in 1869, was an influential Armenian priest, musicologist, and composer. He dedicated his life to collecting, preserving, and studying Armenian folk music, helping to protect his people's rich cultural heritage. His work involved recording traditional songs and integrating their unique melodies into classical music, fostering national identity. Despite suffering severe trauma during the Armenian Genocide, Komitas continued his cultural efforts. He is regarded as a foundational figure in Armenian music, inspiring future generations and earning respect for his contributions to both ethnomusicology and Armenian cultural revival.
