Koli

Koli refers to a community primarily found along the western coast of India, especially in the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra. Traditionally, Kolis have been involved in fishing, maritime activities, and agriculture, shaping their culture around water-based livelihoods. They have a distinct cultural identity, language, and customs rooted in coastal life. Over time, many Kolis have diversified into various professions, but their community remains closely linked to their maritime heritage. Recognized both as an ethnic group and a Scheduled Tribe or Other Backward Class in India, the Koli community plays an important role in the region’s social and economic fabric.
